Hospice of Boston and Greater Brockton is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping terminally ill patients and their families receive the type of quality care necessary to ease the physical and emotional pain of terminal illness and to promote a more dignified experience and understanding of death.

Begun in 1979 as the first hospice in the City of Boston, this grass-roots organization of concerned community residents and professionals has grown considerably since its inception.

The agency was originally incorporated as Dorchester Bay Area Hospice servicing the neighborhoods of Dorchester, South Boston, Mattapan and Roxbury. In 1989 we changed the name to Hospice of Boston, Inc. to reflect the growth of our hospice. To ensure status as a state-of-the-art hospice care program, we applied for and were granted certification as a state-approved hospice. As a certified hospice program, we are now able to receive reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers.

In November 1995 Hospice of Boston, Inc. entered into a new partnership with the Brockton Visiting Nurse Association to form Bay State Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Inc. This affiliation has allowed Hospice of Boston to expand its service area by developing the Hospice of Greater Brockton as a division of HOB, Inc. This new division provides much needed quality hospice care to the terminally ill in Brockton and surrounding communities.

The coming together of the Brockton VNA and Hospice of Boston, Inc. is a natural alliance. Each organization has earned a reputation for dedication and commitment to the patients and families served. Recognizing the growing need for hospice services in the Greater Brockton area, the Brockton VNA looked to Hospice of Boston, Inc. and the development of Hospice of Greater Brockton to provide those services.

In September 1998 in an effort to further enhance our services we achieved accreditation with commendation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare. This shows our continued commitment to providing the highest quality of care that we believe our patients deserve.
